I am looking for as much information as possible on Chat as a customer service alternative. I am responsilbe for call centre activities for a start-up Internet company and would like to know more about Chat customer service...Is it more efficient than the telephone etc...

Voice is obviously more effective than chat... But it also depends on the business type.. If something requires a customer to be online.. chat support would be the best option..dont expect a customer to call and get the confirmation.. they mostly want it instantaneous answer for their queries which is chat.. A combination of chat and voice support is the best thing...

Chat support is an ultimately instrumental tool to deliver optimum customer service. I had clients with which we provide phone, email and chat support, and so far, online chat support rates as number 1 in my company due to the capability of the system to interact worldwide, making it easier for customers to get support right at the click of their mouse without having to spend on international or overseas call rates.
